Tammy Callens is a native of California who moved to Wyoming to
enjoy the beautiful landscapes. Callens' life as a painter
didn't begin until her early thirties. "I started drawing
as a child and worked with watercolors a little late, but as a
parent with young children, I put my creative impulses on hold
until they were a bit older."
Once she began painting with oils, Callens' work began
to improve dramatically and has since sparked a growing national
reputation. Initially a devout plein air painter, she has
only recently begun to finish her work in the studio. "I
still like working directly from life, but the studio helps me
study my composition in depth, time to meditate and to focus on
what originally drew me to that particular idea."
"My training as an artist came through enjoying the
great painters of all time like Zorn and Sergent to mention a
few favorites. Observing their works and studying today's
masters inspired me to paint and improve my skills hopefully
with each painting."
Callens being proficient in landscape, wildlife and portrait,
utilizes traditional painting techniques in a decidedly
contemporary fashion. While her subject matter remains
timeless, her dramatic yet intimate compositions, shimmering
color harmonies and painterly brushwork are firmly rooted in
this century.
Tammy's luminous oils reflect a clarity of vision and a
spiritual focus reminiscent of the earlier Western
Painters such as Edgar Payne, Guy Rose and William Wendt.
