The way of the world by horseback is a wonderful experience.
Carol Spielman has painted many subjects over the years, but
finds herself continually drawn back to her first love --
horses.
Growing up in the beautiful San Juan Islands off the coast of
Washington, Spielman's childhood was filled with bareback rides
on the sandy beach where she often rode deep enough into the
Puget Sound for the horse to swim.
"Color is the most important aspect in my work, very bright
color, with a lot of texture and built up paint," Spielman said.
"I use it to define the energetic gesturing of horses." Spielman
never paints a particular horse, and never defines individual
features. I really love it when a viewer says "That looks just
like my horse,' because I know I've captured the essence," she
said.
Spielman earned a BFA in Studio Arts From Montana State
University - Billings. Upon graduating she received the Edith M.
Freeman Memorial Award for Outstanding Service to the Arts. She
lives with her family in Billings, Montana.
